DEC continuing to study reports of dead and erratic-acting steelhead in the Salmon River

Jan 7, 2015 - The fish are exhibiting "signs of stress and elevated mortality rates due to an apparent thiamine (Vitamin B) deficiency." The most likely source of that is the injesting of alewives. Alewives, an invasive bait fish in the Great Lakes that salmon and steelhead feed predominately on, are known to contain thiaminase, an enzyme that degrades thiamine.

Oct 14, 2014 - With the Army poised to leave some time in 2016 (and this time frame is pretty firm) that will mean the end of maintenance (primarily the fence which is sliced by poachers) and the management of the deer herd which has been happening for nearly 50 years. The owner of the depot, the Seneca County Industrial Development Agency has already stated it wants nothing to do with managing the deer or continuing to maintain the fence. It wants commercial development period.
