The Future Anglers Outreach program provides a truly rewarding way to start off the fishing season. Nearly a decade ago one angler realized the damaging potential technology could inflict on the environment. Not from pollution, but from the fact he saw kids playing more video fishing games than actually fishing. These kids are the next generation, and without any interaction with the outdoors who would be left to care about the environment? Something had to be done, so 6 years ago a group of friends set out to replace one day of kids on video games for one day fishing. They started what would become the Future Anglers Outreach Program. Since that first day, the program has grown tremendous support, gained national attention, and has provided hundreds of rods and reels free of charge. Perhaps the greatest success is watching other events starting or adopting similar programs, all with a common goal to provide that first day of fishing memories. The program differs from derbies in that it offers simple instruction to young anglers and their parents. The one day event’s soul purpose is to give the basic fishing skills to the entire family so fishing can be a successful experience that they will continue to do on a regular basis. All kids receive a rod, reel, bait and tackle to keep free of charge along with food and drinks to all attendees. This years event will be held at Marion Manor Marina, Oneida Lake New York on Sunday April 29th . We need your help with a donation of time to reach our 2012 goal to provide a free day of fishing to 100 area children. Please take the time to consider helping in the following three ways

Volunteers
We need as many avid fisherman as possible to help with the event so we can  hopefully we can have one instructor to every child.  If you don’t know how to fish, your help is still needed and appreciated. Anytime having kids is always better to have extra people on hand if only to observe for safety. You will not be asked to do anything you are not comfortable with doing.

Participant
If you are the parent or guardian of a child that wants to fish, please sign up. Even though the program is free, we often have a few spots that do not get filled. Even if you may have fished a few times before, we still welcome all to attended. Ages 5-12 yrs.  Adults planning to fish must posses a NYS fishing License.

Recruiter
If you know of a deserving family or child we appreciate you spreading the word and help finding us candidates for this, and future events.

The Syracuse Region will host a sportsman’s show for the 59th year!

In Mid December Norm Wightman was doing what most whitetail fanatics would be doing. He was sitting in a tree stand hoping to fill his freezer. Norm’s calm morning was broken by a text stating that the Northeast Sports Show had been cancelled for 2012.

“When that text came in from my dad I was blown away,” says Norm. “I am 46 years old, dad used to take me to that show even before I was old enough to hunt.”

Having been an attendee, and years later a vendor, Norm knew that someone would have to step up to the plate in order to breath new life into this show.  It would be a shame to see a show this old break it’s streak of consecutive years.

“I have worked in the Outdoor Industry for many years and the thought of owning a sports show was only a dream. I would be kidding you if I said that owning the Syracuse Show wasn’t on my wish list. I felt that deep down I could bring something to this show that it had been missing”

Norm immediately contacted his partner John Lenox and Patti Cartwright to make the pitch. “It was an easy decision to make”, added John. “Norm and I had teamed up with Patti Cartwright and Coral Productions in 2011 to help resurrect the Rochester Sportsman’s Expo. With time working against us (5 weeks) we managed to increase attendees by 23% and vendors by 30% over the previous year.

The trio of Patti, Norm and John immediately made an appointment to meet with the Events Manager at the Empire Expo Center (New York State Fairgrounds) to inquire about reserving the dates that had been abandoned. “We were surprised and a little disappointed that that no other promoter had even inquired about securing the 2012 dates to keep this sportsman’s show in Syracuse alive”, says Norm Wightman.

John Lenox ads, “We understood, when we made the commitment that this was no small undertaking. Rebuilding a major show in less than six weeks is certainly a challenge, but it is far from impossible. The three of us could not make this happen alone as we have received tremendous support from outdoor industry friends and family”.

Patti, Norm and John had a vision for the rebirth of this show. “New attractions and outdoor television celebrities were at the top of the list amongst many other changes that were needed to provide an outstanding show for exhibitors and attendees. This show has dynamic potential and we are committed to its success”, ads Patti Cartwright.

In addition to proven favorites like the trout pond (allowing young and old the opportunity to catch live fish) and the North East Big Buck Club the New York Sportsman’s Expo will also feature Haley and G.O. Heath from Family Traditions Television, Tim Andrus from Monster Bucks and Deer City USA and the Martin Archery Girl / Buffalo Jill Laura Francese.

“In addition to our celebrities we have partnered with AJ’s Archery to host an indoor archery range. The US Army will be attending with their rock climbing wall. We will be hosting duck, goose and turkey calling competitions, exotic animal demonstrations, and many seminars covering all aspects of the Great Outdoors” says Patti Cartwright.

The New York Sportsman’s Expo will take place January 27th from Noon to 9pm, January 28th from 9am to 7pm and January 29th from 9am to 5pm.

Norm Wightman ads, “At the end of the day it all boils down to one thing. Providing a home in Central New York for exhibitors from around the world and sportsman from the North East. We refused to go one single year without providing this home”.
